For me, the program of AA is more about learning how to live than it is about quitting alcohol. I suppose it is possible that there are people out there who only have a drinking problem and don’t really need the spiritual program to deal with their living problem. For them, drug interventions are a good idea and should definitely be tried. I agree that AA should stay out of it. I went without drinking for three and a half years and then couldn’t go on living without the help of AA. Which means I need the spiritual program of AA.
We should all remember that in AA’s 12 Steps, quitting drinking is only the first step. The next 11 are about abandoning ourselves to God as we understand God. Admitting our faults to Him and to our fellows. Clearing away the wreckage of the past. Giving freely of what we find.
AA doesn’t work for everyone. The early trusted servants were right. AA needs to bring the message of AA to the suffering alcoholic. If LSD is useful in dealing with addiction, we need to leave that up to the medical professionals who run the LSD clinics to make their own sales pitch.
