I'm always amazed at how Americans can't seem to do something so simple. When Canada introduced the dollar coin, they stopped printing the 1$ bill. The opposition to the dollar coin evaporated when the vast number of people who were against it found out how useful it is. When they introduced the 2$ coin, almost no one batted an eye.

America could introduce both 1 and 2 dollar coins. When bills disappear, people will get on board. It's not that hard.
