It's been quite a long time since I read "Pamela". I'm reminded of the excuse used to not believe women who are abused, "why didn't you leave?" or "why didn't you say something sooner?" Sadly, there are plenty of women who are trapped by circumstances in our times, we don't have to go back to 1740. It illustrates that with all our progress we have so far to go.
