The notion that anyone immigrates to another country for the hell of it is the biggest misconception I find. If you decide to immigrate somewhere it's for a compelling reason.
I immigrated to Texas from Ontario because I met someone I wanted to marry. I didn't flee war or famine but falling in love was a compelling reason for me.
We immigrated again back to Ontario because Texas was so misaligned with my values that I couldn't take living there any more.
The author talked about the costs which are considerable but I also abandoned careers twice. I'm 56 in a month and I'll be working until I'm 70 cause I don't have nearly the resources to retire before that.
